Kabir's Hut
The dais where Sant Kabir used to
give his sermons now has a Kutia (shed) built over it. Before this, Sant
Kabir used to live on the present day Neeru Teela, and it was here that
he was brought up. Near Kabir’s house was a colony of kasais or butchers
(generally such a colony was called Galkatton ki basti). After Kabir
took deeksha (to pledge a Guru mantra) from Swami Ramanand, huge
gatherings started to come to listen to him. Kabir used to work on the
weaver’s handloom (kargha) most of the day and enlightened the
gatherings in the remaining time. Gradually the people started coming in
larger numbers such that the space available in front of Kabir’s house
was no longer sufficient. Just opposite Kabir’s house in the butchers’
colony, goats were chopped every day; something that Kabir’s followers
detested. When this issue was taken to Kabir, he said that one should be
absorbed and occupied with whatever one does, ‘let the butchers do their
job while you do yours’. In order to give his followers the true import
of his words, he recited to them the following:
Kabira Teri Jhonpdi, Galkatton
Ke Paas
Jo Karega So Bharega, Tum Kyon Hot
Udaas
